More About the Authors
Excerpts
Chapter 1: Healthy Bible reading involves both Desire and Discipline but it is very important which one you lead with. Bible reading is not the same as doing a homework assignment in school. Usually the objective in school homework is to acquire some information. But the objective in reading the Bible is to enrich your relationship with God and be transformed. Discipline is sufficient motivation to acquire facts, but not to change a heart.

Chapter 2: This is the step where you simply list what you see. These are the Facts of the passage. It is OK to use the same words the passage uses when you write out the Facts. You are just writing short phrases that identify what you see. Be careful not to decide, either way, about whether you understand the passage or not. Rather, withhold judgement and continue to identify things you see.

Chapter 3: A test of thinking... What miracle in your life are you thinking is a disaster? Jesus’ death on the cross looked like a huge disaster. Jesus came to be the king of the Israelites but they killed Him. It looked like a failure. Looks can be deceiving. What looked like a failure was actually the biggest victory in the history of mankind.

Chapter 3: Keep in mind that every passage in the Bible is written by two authors and is written for two different recipients. The two authors of any Bible passage are God and the human author. The human author of the passage might be someone like Paul, John, or Moses—whoever wrote that particular Bible book. The first of the two recipients are the ancient people, like the church at Ephesus or the Christians in Rome. We are the second recipients of every Bible passage.

Chapter 5: Your family of origin experiences can effect how you understand the Bible... But the antidote for much of family of origin issues is to get to know God. He is your new Parent and is very reasonable and kind. The better you know Him and replace old patterns with patterns consistent with what God is like, the less your background will contaminate your present life.

Chapter 5: Imitation is the simplest and most natural way for any of us to learn. It transcends words. You just watch somebody doing something then go and try it yourself... As we experience time focusing on God, something special happens. Whenever we focus on a person for a period of time, we start becoming like them. This is called the process of Imitation. You become like the person you watch.

Chapter 6: It looks like our schedules are completely unchangeable. We have worked so hard to get our schedules to work as poorly as they do, we don’t want to risk making things worse. This kind of thinking is a problem because when you think like this you tend to rule out possible time slots without giving the necessary thought to what might be possible.

Chapter 7: The first description of effective petitioning urges us to focus on God’s Promises. Don’t pray the problems. Pray the Promises.

Chapter 8: Often it takes humility to admit the true level of your Desire for God and start there. There is a temptation to worry that you should be further along. But keep in mind that our walk with God is not about us--our performance or our power.

Excerpts
Volume 1, Luke 8:22-25, Panel 2 Lessons: - Problems bigger than our ability to manage will come up as we follow Christ. The solution is our faith in Christ’s ability to handle them. - Jesus puts us before His own needs. He was tired, but He got up. He did not rebuke the disciples for interrupting His sleep. He taught them what would have been helpful for them in a crisis—faith. - Jesus responds to our fears. He immediately calmed the storm. He did not play with their emotions.

Volume 1, Mark 12:41-44, Commentary: We should take heart that Jesus takes time to notice the “insignificant” in the world. He uses a different measuring stick to measure significance. You don’t need fame and fortune to be important to Jesus. He is impressed by our faith. He supernaturally knew the widow’s financial situation. He saw that her security was not pinned on her money.

Volume 1, Mark 14:32-42, Panel 1 Facts: - Jesus took the disciples to Gethsemane. - Jesus told His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." - Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him. - Jesus became very troubled and distressed. - He told His disciples, "My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and watch."

Volume 1, Matthew 4:1-11, Commentary: - Jesus is determined. He does not let personal suffering deter Him from doing God’s will. - Jesus is genuine. He shared His grief and distress with His disciples. - Jesus is humble and willing to submit to God’s authority. - Jesus is gentle. He doesn’t belittle us when we are wrong.

Volume 1, Matthew 14:14-21, Commentary: But, sometimes, Jesus helps us by asking us to do what seems impossible. He told the disciples the crowd didn’t need to go away to eat. "You give them something to eat," He said. Well, color the disciples dumbfounded. Earth to Jesus, "We only have five loaves and two fishes." "Bring them here to Me," was His reply.

Volume 2, Mark 10:13-16, Panel 3 Challenges: - Am I arguing with people, trying to protect God or do I respect Him enough to know He is responsible for Himself? - Am I making it easier or harder for people to come to Jesus? - Am I misreading Jesus? Do I think He is too busy or too important to deal with me or my problems?

Volume 2, Matthew 4:1-11, Commentary: Jesus got through His temptations because He was more than His needs and He trusted God. We can get though our temptations by not letting our needs define us. Temptations lose power when we realize God has already promised us everything Satan offers to "give us." We won't be grasping for so much on earth when we realize we will have it all in heaven.

Volume 2, John 18:1-11, Panel 2 Lessons: There is power coming out of Jesus when He declares His deity "I Am." The people fell backward to the ground. People see evidence of God's power in nature and His Word today, and choose to ignore it. They get back up determined to accuse or ignore Him.

Volume 2, John 21:4-14, Commentary: The Son of God was humble enough to cook breakfast for a band of men who had failed Him. But, He was not passive. He didn't fix their fish-less problem until they admitted they needed help and until they did what He told them to do.

Volume 3, Luke 8:43-48, Panel 4 Response: Thank You Lord that You can heal so easily what is impossible for man. Thank You that Your power flows toward our faith. Please help me to increase my faith in You.

Volume 3, Luke 19:1-10, Commentary: God notices when we make the extra effort to find Him. In that culture, men of Zaccheus's rank did not run. They did not climb trees. That was undignified. But Jesus loves a sinner who embraces and appreciates the opportunity to be with Him. This is the only time in scripture where Jesus invites Himself to be a guest in a home, and Zaccheus's heart was ready.

Volume 3, Luke 19:28-35, Commentary: Jesus could have commandeered a four horse chariot. That would have been way more impressive than a colt. But Jesus wanted the colt, and not just any colt. It had to be a colt that had never been ridden. Most animals have to be broken in before they are rideable. But since Jesus is Master over His creation, the colt was subject to Him and cooperated.

Volume 3, John 20:10-17, Panel 2 Response: - For those who look for Jesus, and linger when they can't find Him, He will come to them. - God cares about our feelings and asks us to express them to Him as a way to stir our faith. - Jesus' appearance is not always recognizable, but we will recognize His voice. His children recognize the power, love and majesty of His voice.
